SUP gift ideas: what to give by profile

Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through one of them, Matosurf earns a small commission at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t influence our recommendations.

Buying paddleboard kit without knowing what the person already owns is the surest way to end up with a duplicate or, worse, something that does not fit their board. This guide sorts ideas by profile rather than budget, and it gives no prices: prices change and we do not want to show ones that have gone stale. The selection draws on manufacturer and retailer documentation, not hands-on testing. For each idea we say who it suits, why, and the question to ask before buying.

For someone who has just got their first inflatable board

A beginner's kit is rarely complete, and what is missing is often a simple accessory. A leash is the safest gift at this stage, provided it is the right type: coiled for flat water, straight for waves, and never on the ankle on a river. Our leash guide covers length, thickness and the moving-water rule, and the SUP leashes on OutletSUP category lets you compare what exists. Before buying, ask how long the board is: the leash should not be shorter.

If you are unsure about the rest of the list, our beginner SUP kit guide separates what is needed now from what can wait.

For someone who has always inflated by hand

A decent pump changes the most tiring part of an outing: inflating. A double-action hand pump stays useful even if an electric one comes later, and the electric one needs a power source: see manual or electric pump and how to choose a SUP pump. The upside of giving a pump is that everyone has one and few are happy with theirs. Ask before buying whether the current one reaches the pressure the board needs and whether the new one fits the valve. The board's manual answers both. The pumps and paddleboard accessories on OutletSUP category lists what is available.

For someone who travels with their board

A bag or a dry bag makes travelling simpler: the bag a board ships with is not always the one you would choose on the road. Our storage and transport guide explains what a good bag should do (handles, zips, room for the pump and paddle). A dry bag slips into a suitcase and earns its place on the first outing. Ask for the size of the current bag before choosing. To compare, see the bags and paddleboard accessories on OutletSUP.

For the paddler who has everything but a good paddle

The paddle is often the weak link in a package: the one supplied is enough to start, not always to last. It is also the riskiest gift if you do not know the person well, because the right length depends on their height and how they paddle. Our guide to choosing a SUP paddle gives the method and compares materials. Give a paddle only if you know the person's height, or if it is adjustable and you have seen that on the product page. The paddles on OutletSUP list their features sheet by sheet.

For a child or teenager just starting

This profile has one simple rule: safety first, then the rest. A buoyancy aid in their size, tried on them, comes before any accessory; see buoyancy aids. A buoyancy aid is not chosen blind, so it is not a surprise gift. For something lighter, a small dry bag with their name on it or a correctly sized leash for their board works better.

For someone who wants to be fully kitted out

If the person has no board, leave that decision for later. A board needs their weight, level and the water they will use it on: our size guide sets out the method and the inflatable SUP guide keeps the sheets. The honest approach is to choose together from the inflatable paddleboards on OutletSUP category rather than order a board in secret.

For a couple or family sharing one board

When several people take turns on the same board, what is missing is almost always a second copy of the personal items: one leash per paddler and a paddle in the right size for each. Our guide to two-person SUPs covers what changes with two on board. Again, ask sizes before buying, and do not order a leash for a board you have not seen.

If you know nothing about their kit

Then choose what fits almost any board and almost any paddler: a dry bag for belongings, or a repair kit, which manufacturers include in their packs (the Zray's does, per its sheet) but which gets lost or worn. Our guide to essential SUP accessories helps spot what a kit lacks. And if in doubt, simply ask the person what they would like: a gift chosen together almost never gets the size wrong.

What not to buy as a gift

  • A board as a surprise. Size, the person's weight, level and type of water decide the right model. A wrong board is a bulky gift and returning it can be a hassle.
  • A buoyancy aid without a fitting. Size and cut matter, and safety cannot be guessed.
  • A paddle without knowing the height. See above: the length depends on the person.
  • A pump or leash without having seen the board. Valve, pressure, board length: three details that decide compatibility.
  • A generic accessory bundle. It rarely holds what the person needs, and it duplicates what they already have.

How to avoid unpleasant surprises

We give no prices, delivery dates or discount codes: all of that changes, and only the seller can confirm it when you order. If the gift has to arrive by a particular date, read the delivery conditions on the product page before ordering, and keep proof of purchase. To find out what the person owns, a discreet question to someone close is usually enough: board length, pump type, height for the paddle.

When this guide does not apply to you

If the person rents on holiday and owns no kit, or already has everything here, a gear gift is not necessarily the right one: a lesson, an outing together or a care guide (inflatable SUP care) may please more than one more accessory.

FAQ

A leash of the right type, provided you know the board's length. Everyone uses one, and the mistake is easy to avoid by asking the length.
