The leash is the cheapest thing in your bag and the only one that keeps you attached to your flotation. Get the size wrong and it drags, tangles or snaps; get the type wrong for the water you are on and it can put you in real danger. Here is how to pick the right length, thickness and type — and the one rule that is not up for debate.
In short
Match the leash to your board's length, never shorter. Straight cord for surfing, coiled for flat-water SUP. And on a river or any moving water, never an ankle leash: a quick-release waist system only, if a leash is used at all.
What length of leash do you need?
Every manufacturer of a surfboard leash or a SUP leash says the same thing: the leash matches the length of the board, or goes slightly over if you fall between sizes. Too short and the board snaps back at you after a wipeout; far too long and it drags and snags.

Manufacturers differ only on what to do between sizes: some say round up to the next foot, others say stay at the exact length. Either way the shared rule is to never go below the length of the board.
Cord thickness
A surf leash's diameter is a trade-off between drag and strength. A thin cord holds you back less when paddling and disappears underfoot, but takes the pull of a powerful wave less well. A thick cord is reassuring in size but you feel it on every stroke.
Competition leashes drop to around 4.7 to 6 mm and are built for small conditions. Everyday models sit around 6 to 7 mm, the default for most sessions. Above that, cords of 7 to 8 mm and up are for big waves and longboards. Exact figures vary by brand; the logic doesn't.
Straight or coiled: which type for which use
Straight leash
- The standard in surfing
- Predictable board distance after a fall
- No spring-back effect
- Behaves well in waves and whitewater
Coiled leash
- Stays out of the water: much less drag
- Does not trail behind the board when paddling
- The choice for flat-water and touring SUP
- Not for waves: unpredictable recoil
In short: straight for surfing, coiled for SUP on lakes, estuaries and touring. For SUP surfing you go back to a straight cord, for the same reasons as in surfing.
Ankle, calf or waist: where to attach it
The ankle is the standard attachment point in surfing and in flat-water SUP alike — Australians call the whole thing a leg rope. The calf shows up mostly on longboards, where it keeps the cord away from your feet as you walk the deck. The waist, paired with a quick-release system, is for moving water and for disciplines like SUP yoga where an ankle cuff gets in the way.
Rivers and moving water: the rule that is not up for debate
An ankle leash on a river can pin a paddler underwater against an obstruction. Safety bodies are unanimous on this: never an ankle leash in moving water.
The shared guidance is that on moving water a leash must be attached at or above the waist, be reachable with both hands and sit on a quick-release system. British Canoeing goes further for whitewater and states that no leash system is currently acceptable there. So the bodies differ between "quick-release waist leash" and "no leash at all" — but every one of them agrees the standard ankle leash has no place on a river.
What the rules say in the UK
There is no blanket legal requirement to wear a leash for surfing or paddleboarding in the UK. The leash is universal practice rather than statute, and clubs, schools and event organisers usually impose it through their own rules and insurance conditions.

Rules are national. France applies Division 240, which imposes specific equipment beyond 300 m from shelter on boards over 3.50 m; Spain requires a lifejacket outside the bathing zone. Check locally before you paddle abroad.
Anatomy of a leash: what fails
A leash is four parts. The urethane cord, which stretches under load and returns. The swivels at each end, which stop the cord twisting as you turn. The rail saver, the flat webbing that spreads the pull across the tail instead of cutting into the rail. And the cuff, the band that connects you to all of it.
The failure points are always the same: the cord near the cuff or the board-end junction, swivels seized by salt and sand, rail-saver webbing worn by abrasion and UV, and cuff Velcro that has lost its grip.
When to replace a leash
Manufacturers don't agree on a fixed interval, and with good reason: lifespan depends mostly on salt, sun and wave size. The shared advice is to inspect it before every session and replace it as soon as anything structural shows: a cracked or thinning cord, stretched or torn Velcro, a corroded or stiff swivel, frayed webbing, a moulded junction going white. Treat it as a consumable, not a lifetime purchase.
Which leash for which paddler
- Learning to surf: a straight cord matching the board, in 7 mm. You will fall a lot, so start with something solid.
- Regular surfer: a straight 6 to 7 mm at board length.
- Longboarder: 9 or 10 ft, often on the calf to keep the deck clear.
- SUP on a lake or estuary: a coiled ankle leash that stays out of the water.
- SUP at sea: a coiled leash, plus a buoyancy aid and a means of calling for help.
- Rivers or moving water: a quick-release waist belt, never the ankle.
