Camber Sands, just outside Rye on the East Sussex coast, is a well-known kitesurfing beach on the south coast. It's a tidal sandy beach with a council water sports zone and a kitesurf school on the beach, with options for first-timers, returning riders and experienced kiters who want kit or coaching. If you want to book kitesurfing lessons at Camber Sands, this guide explains the options, what to ask before you book, and the tide, wind and zone rules that apply on the day. Looking for kitesurfing lessons near Rye? The school is at Kite Beach, Lydd Road, Camber.

Lessons and Courses for Every Level

From a first session with a trainer kite to multi-day camps.

The Kitesurf Centre is a kitesurf school at Camber Sands, on Lydd Road. Its own site splits lessons by level. Beginner group lessons run from Intro to the Kite, where you learn to set up, launch and control a trainer kite on the beach, through Bodydrag Basics to First Rides, where you stand up on the board for the first time. Private lessons cover beginners, intermediates and advanced riders, from kite safety and theory to upwind riding, self-launch and rescue, and freestyle and big air.

Beginner kitesurfing course at Camber Sands

The school says its beginner courses need no experience, and that you can book on your own and be matched with a small group. Its FAQ gives a minimum age of 16 for group lessons, or 12 if you make up your own group of four, and notes that you don't need to be strong, because the harness takes most of the pull. Everything is supplied for courses, including wetsuit, buoyancy aid, harness, helmet and kit, but not neoprene boots or gloves, so bring your own if you feel the cold. Arrive an hour before your lesson starts.

One-day, weekend and intensive options

For a weekend kitesurfing course at Camber Sands, the school lists a Long Weekend Kite Camp, Friday to Monday, with 18 hours of tuition in a small group of four. Its 5 Day Zero To Hero Kite Camp runs Monday to Friday with 25 hours of coaching, aimed at taking a beginner to an independent rider in a week. Those are the two camps on its site. We didn't find a course called a one-day course there, so if you want a single day of kitesurf lessons at Camber Sands, ask the school what it offers.

Private kitesurfing instructor at Camber Sands

Its Private Tuition is one-to-one coaching at your own pace, which is the quickest way to progress if you're short of time or nervous. The school's site also lists BKSA instructor courses, which train other instructors. That isn't the same as an individual instructor's level. When you book, ask which BKSA qualification your instructor holds.

How the school handles wind and tides

Lessons follow the wind and the tide, so you may start in the afternoon. The school confirms your lesson and the spot at about 5pm the day before, and says it also teaches from nearby Greatstone beach when the wind is northerly. If the forecast means it has to reschedule, it says you have 12 months from booking to rebook. New to the sport? Our guide to getting started in kitesurfing covers what to expect.

Choosing a Kitesurfing School at Camber Sands

We don't crown a winner. Here's what to weigh up.

  • Qualifications. Ask which BKSA level your instructor holds, and who is first aid and rescue trained.
  • Group size. A group of four is the figure the school gives for its camps. Ask what size applies to the lesson you want.
  • What's included. Check the wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid and harness, and what you need to bring yourself.
  • Where you'll learn. Camber and Greatstone work in different winds, so ask what the plan is for your date.
  • Weather policy. Find out how rescheduling works if the wind doesn't suit.
  • Real reviews. Read recent ones, and look at what they say about safety and instruction.

We've only profiled one school, because it's the one we could source. If you know of another operator at Camber, check its credentials the same way.

Gear Hire and Equipment Rental

What's on offer, and what to confirm first.

The school lists kitesurf gear hire at Camber Sands as one hour, two hours or a full day of four hours, each described as a full kit set-up with kite, bar, board and wetsuit. It positions the shorter slots for keeping your skills sharp between lessons. If you want to hire kitesurfing equipment at Camber Sands, or just a kitesurf board and kite at Camber, note that we couldn't read the school's hire terms, so ask what level of experience it requires, whether it asks to see a qualification, and what the deposit and insurance arrangements are.

We can't say whether same-day kitesurf rental at Camber Sands is possible. The school's lessons are confirmed the afternoon before, so book hire ahead and check on the day. You'll need a wetsuit rental for kitesurfing in colder months too. The kit set-up includes a wetsuit, but ask about boots, gloves and a hood. If you're buying kit instead, our kitesurf gear guide and kite size calculator are a good starting point.

Refresher Lessons and Advanced Coaching

For returning riders and anyone ready to progress.

Returning after a break? The school doesn't list a course called a kitesurfing refresher, but its intermediate private lessons cover edging and riding upwind, kite power management, sliding transitions, toeside and carving turns, self-launch, and land and rescue. Those are the skills you'd want to rebuild, so ask whether a private session can be tailored as a refresher. For advanced coaching at Camber Sands, it lists advanced private lessons in big air, kite loops, freestyle, unhooked riding and handle passes, plus half-day clinics in big air, freestyle and strapless surfboard riding.

On hydrofoil lessons at Camber Sands, the school lists weekday wingfoil lessons of three and four hours and a one-day wingfoil clinic, but we didn't find a kitefoil course. Foiling generally asks for solid board skills first. Our kite foil guide explains the prerequisites, and the school can tell you whether you're ready.

Prices, Gift Vouchers and Booking

How the cost works, and how to get a firm answer.

We aren't quoting prices. The school's pages we could read show no lesson prices, and the only figure we found was from a third-party voucher site, so we won't repeat it. How much kitesurfing lessons at Camber Sands cost depends on the format (group or private), the length (a session, a long weekend or five days), what's included, and the season. Ask the school for the current price, what it covers and the cancellation terms.

The school links to gift cards from its site, so a Camber Sands kitesurf lesson voucher or kitesurfing gift experience is possible, but we couldn't read the terms or the validity period, so check those before you buy. The school's site books online, and you can also call or email. Its site lists the following hours: May to September every day, 9am to 5pm; April and October Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm; November to March weekends, 10am to 3pm. Phone: +44 (0)1797 724126 (9am to 5pm). Email: school@thekitesurfcentre.com. Address: Kite Beach, Lydd Road, Camber, East Sussex, TN31 7SB. Confirm all of this before you travel, because opening hours change.

Safety and Planning Your Visit

Wind, tides, zones and local rules.

Wind and which beach to use

Rother District Council's wind guide says southerly and westerly winds are offshore at Greatstone, so use Camber Sands, while easterly and northerly winds are offshore at Camber, so use Greatstone Beach. It says to avoid the area in a north-westerly, which is offshore at both, and that water sports aren't advised in offshore winds. Forecasts also don't capture the sea breeze. The school's conditions page says to add 30 to 100% to the forecast on sunny or warm days.

Tides

Camber is very tidal. The council says not to kitesurf three hours either side of high tide, and the school's conditions page says to leave two and a half hours either side at Camber, because the water's too high to be safe. Use the longer margin. The council also warns of fast incoming tides, sandbars that can cut you off, and soft sand and mud exposed at low tide. Our guide to how tides work explains how to read a tide table.

Zones and rules

The council's Water Sports Zone is at Broomhill car park, which has free parking and a direct walk onto the kite and water sports area. Details of the zones are on signs at the beach entrances. Its code of conduct says to launch at least 50 metres from objects or other people, not near the rocks, and only fly within the designated zones. Riders must hold third-party insurance, should never ride alone and are advised to wear a helmet. Independent riders must keep out of the licensed schools' instructing areas. Lose a kite or board on the water and you should report it to the Coastguard. Dogs aren't permitted in the zoned areas from 1 May to 30 September.

Hazards, flags and lifeguards

The council lists wooden groynes and rock boulders, shore break and strong currents at high tide, and two shipwrecks at the eastern end. The Ministry of Defence ranges lie to the east, and you must not enter the water when the red flags are flying. A failed launch or loose kite is a serious danger to pedestrians and road traffic. Between the red-and-yellow flags is the lifeguarded swimming area, and surfers and kayakers use the black-and-white chequered flags. For 2026 the council lists lifeguards from 10am to 6pm at Camber Central, weekends and bank holidays from 3 April to 17 May and daily from 23 May to 27 September, and at Camber Western with a mix of weekends and daily cover between 23 May and 27 September. No flags means no lifeguards. In an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Read our kitesurf safety guide and check the council's Camber Sands page for the current rules.

Parking and getting there

Broomhill car park is free. The council lists pay-and-display and RingGo parking at Camber Central and the Western car park, RingGo-only parking on Old Lydd Road, and no overnight stays in any of the Camber car parks. Charges and gate times change, so check the council's car park page before you travel.

The school confirms your lesson and location at about 5pm the day before. If it has to reschedule because of the forecast, it says you have 12 months from booking to rebook.

No. The council says not to kitesurf three hours either side of high tide, and the local school says to leave two and a half hours. Use the longer gap, because the beach loses its launching area and the hazards come closer.

The school supplies wetsuits, buoyancy aids, harnesses, helmets and kit, but not neoprene boots or gloves. It also suggests warm clothes, sun cream, sunglasses and a towel.

Independent riders do. Rother District Council says riders must hold third-party insurance. The school says its instructors and participants are covered by its own insurance during lessons.

Broomhill car park is free and leads straight onto the council's water sports zone. Other Camber car parks are pay and display or RingGo, and none allows overnight stays.
