The most expensive mistake you can make with surfboard fins is also the most common: buying a beautiful set that does not fit your board's boxes. FCS and Futures look similar in a product photo and are entirely incompatible in real life. Get the system right first, then the size, then the setup β in that order.
In short
Check which boxes your board has before anything else: FCS (including FCS II) and Futures do not mix, and there is no reliable adapter between them. Then size by rider weight β at 65 to 80 kg you are a Medium on every chart we compared, though the bands overlap rather than match. For most surfers, a Medium thruster set in honeycomb construction is the proven default.
Fin systems: FCS, FCS II, Futures and the US box
Three systems cover almost every hardboard sold in the UK. Original FCS (FCS I) fins carry two small tabs that drop into two round plugs and are held by grub screws, tightened with a fin key. FCS II keeps the dual-tab idea but builds a spring clip into the plug, so fins snap in and out with no tools. Futures uses a single long base that slides into a one-piece box and is held by a single grub screw at the front β so a key is always needed.
Compatibility runs one way only: older dual-tab fins work in FCS II plugs if you add grub screws, but FCS II fins do not fit the old FCS I plugs. Within Futures, all fins fit all boxes.
FCS (including FCS II) and Futures are not cross-compatible: different base shapes, different boxes, no reliable adapter. A quiver that mixes both systems needs separate fin sets β check the boxes before you pay.
Soft-tops are their own world: entry-level boards often use proprietary plastic fittings with coarse self-tapping or bolt-through screws. Conversion kits to FCS-style plugs exist, and branded soft-tops increasingly ship FCS-compatible from the factory. Classic longboards use a fourth system β the US box, covered further down.
FCS II vs Futures: the trade-off in practice
FCS II
- Tool-less: swap fins in the car park in a minute
- No small screws to drop in the sand (though you can add them)
- Takes older dual-tab fins once grub screws are fitted
- Occasional reports of fins popping out on very heavy landings β some surfers add screws for big waves
Futures
- One-piece base in a long box: a secure, proven hold
- Every Futures fin fits every Futures box
- Single screw per fin β but you always need the key
- Slower changes; strip the screw or crack the box if you overtighten
Neither system wins outright, and you rarely get to choose: the board you already own decides. The real decision happens when you buy the board.
How surfboard fins are sized: weight bands
Manufacturers grade surfboard fins S/M/L by rider weight β and their charts overlap without agreeing. The two big systems publish roughly these bands:

The disagreement is genuine: some FCS II ranges put Small below 65 kg, the XL threshold moves between 80 and 90 kg by source, and Captain Fin's Medium (63β86 kg) overlaps its Large (from about 79β81 kg). Treat the bands as guidelines, not rules. Between sizes β say 70 to 75 kg β let the waves decide: smaller for weak surf or a looser feel, larger for power, weight or control.
Fin setups: single to five boxes
How many fins the board runs, and where, sets its character. The behaviour shapers and buying guides broadly agree on:

A five-box board is not surfed with five full-size fins: it is a platform β thruster for everyday waves, quad when the surf gets fast, sometimes with a small trailer fin.
Template geometry: what each curve does
Once the size is right, the template fine-tunes the feel. The consensus rules of thumb:
- Base length β longer means more drive and speed with a wider arc; shorter pivots tighter, for pocket surfing and small waves.
- Depth β deeper fins hold in steep faces and at speed; too shallow for your weight and the tail slides out.
- Rake β a swept-back tip draws turns out and holds control at speed; a more upright outline snaps shorter, quicker turns.
- Cant β side fins tilted out towards the rails ease the roll from rail to rail, at a small cost in straight-line drive; centre fins run no cant.
- Toe β side fins angled towards the stringer bite harder into turns but add drag; more parallel is faster, more drawn out.
Mainstream templates from FCS, Futures or Captain Fin all sit in a proven middle band β the template is where you tune drive against looseness once the size is right.
Materials: plastic to carbon
Injection-moulded plastic or composite fins are the budget tier: soft, whippy flex, vague at speed, but fine for learning and soft-tops. Solid fibreglass is stiff with predictable flex towards the tip β drive and hold for powerful surfers and bigger waves, at the premium end. Honeycomb cores under fibreglass skins cut weight with medium stiffness β springy but controlled β and dominate the performance mid-range. Carbon, as inserts or panels, rebounds fastest, though it can feel harsh for lighter surfers or very small waves.
Fitting, removing and flying with your fins
The advice shapers and retailers repeat most: never overtighten a grub screw β stop at snug, or you crack plugs and strip heads β and clean sand and salt out of bases and boxes first. FCS II: line up the front of the tabs and press until the fin clicks; to remove, rock it gently front to back, never side to side. Futures: slide the front of the base under the box lip, push the back down, tighten the screw. The fin key is a small hex key, supplied with most sets.
Flying? Take the fins off: boards pack flatter and a cracked box is the classic baggage souvenir. Carry the fin setup in a padded wallet with a spare key and screws β worn clips, half-seated FCS II fins and loose screws are the usual ways fins get lost at sea.
Longboards, SUPs and shallow water: the US box
Traditional longboards and many mid-lengths run a US box: a long slot (around 8β10.5 inches) with a plate and screw, letting the centre fin slide forward or back. This is the home of the classic single β the "skeg", a word now dated outside vintage longboarding. Singles run 8β10 inches and up: bigger (9β10") for nose-riding and stability, smaller (7β8") for a looser board. A 2+1 fin setup drops the centre to 6β8 inches with 3β4" side bites. Forward in the box loosens the board; back adds hold and tracking β adjust in 5β10 mm steps.
Surf-style SUPs follow the same US-box logic with fins of 6 to 9 inches. On rivers and shallow, rocky spots, switch to short flex fins (2β5 inches, soft plastic): less hold and tracking, but they bend on impact instead of snapping or wrecking the box.
Which fins for which surfer
- Beginner on a soft-top: the supplied plastic fins are fine; an FCS conversion kit opens up standard fins later.
- Everyday surfer: a Medium thruster in honeycomb.
- Heavier surfer or powerful waves: size L, solid fibreglass or carbon-reinforced.
- Fish and small-wave boards: twin for speed and play, or a quad to keep a wide tail from sliding.
- Longboarder: a single of 8β10 inches, or a 2+1 for a more manoeuvrable style.
- River or shallow-water SUP: a short flex fin that survives contact with the bottom.
