Surf foiling has changed what a wave can give you. A traditional board is stuck with the surface and everything happening on it; a foil lifts you clear of the lot, and the sensation is closer to flying than to surfing. It's a technical discipline, though, and it punishes anyone who tries to skip the steps.
What is surf foiling?
Surf foiling, or hydrofoiling in a surf context, means fixing an aeroplane-wing-shaped structure beneath a board. As speed builds, that structure creates lift and raises the board above the water. The glide that follows is near-silent, and it no longer depends solely on the immediate power of the wave.
The discipline took off about a decade ago, driven by surfers looking to extend their sessions in smaller swell and to push the limits of what's possible on a wave.
How a foil (hydrofoil) works
A foil is made up of four main parts:
The board: it serves as the flotation and carrying platform. At the start, the board floats on the water as normal. Once speed is up, it lifts off the surface.
The mast: the vertical piece that connects the board to the carrying assembly. Its length determines how high the board rises above the water. A long mast (80 to 95cm) gives more tolerance in the waves, as it keeps the board well clear of the disturbed surface.
The fuselage: the horizontal bar connecting the mast to the wings. Its length influences stability and manoeuvrability. A long fuselage is more stable but less responsive in a turn; a short one gives more agility at the expense of stability.
The front wing and the rear stabiliser: the front wing generates the lift. Its surface, profile and aspect ratio determine take-off speed, maximum lift and manoeuvrability. The stabiliser, at the back of the fuselage, provides stability in pitch and roll.
Lift obeys the same aerodynamic principle as an aeroplane wing: water flows faster over the top than the underside, creating a low-pressure zone above the wing that draws the foil upwards. As soon as lift exceeds the weight of the system (rider plus kit), the board lifts off.
The different types of foil (surf foil, kite foil, wing foil, eFoil)
Although this guide focuses on surf foiling, it helps to understand the variants:
Surf foil: ridden on a towed or paddled-into wave. It's the most physically demanding form, because the rider has to generate their own speed by paddling before standing up.
Wing foil: the rider uses a handheld wing that catches the wind for propulsion. Accessible in light to moderate wind, it's now the most popular gateway into foiling.
Kite foil: propulsion by a kite with a foil under the board. A spectacular, fast discipline, it demands good kite control before you add the complexity of the foil.
eFoil: a board powered by a battery and an electric motor built into the mast. The rider needs neither wind nor waves. It's accessible with no watersports background, but it sits at a premium price.
Prerequisites before you start
Foiling isn't a discipline you improvise. Injuries linked to poorly managed falls are common among riders who skip the steps. Here's what you need under your belt before you set foot on a foil.
Recommended surf level
An intermediate level in normal surfing is essential. You need to be able to:
- Catch waves independently on medium-sized waves (waist- to chest-high, around 3 to 4 feet)
- Perform committed turns (bottom turn, top turn) with control
- Handle loss-of-control situations without panicking
- Swim comfortably in open-water conditions
If you still rely on others to push your board into the wave, spend a few more months on normal surfing first. Foiling amplifies errors of positioning and timing: catching a wave late on a foil means an immediate wipeout, without the margin for error that a traditional floating board offers.
Mastering the pop-up and reading waves
The pop-up on a foil isn't fundamentally different from surfing, but the tolerance for error is much reduced. Your foot position has to be precise from the very first stance, because the foil reacts to sloppy placement straight away. A gap of a few centimetres can be enough to unbalance the whole thing.
Reading waves is just as crucial. In surf foiling you have to anticipate the section of the wave that will carry you, position your board in the right spot in the line-up, and generate speed before the wave passes you by. That takes a solid understanding of how a wave breaks, how energy spreads along the wall of water, and the exact timing at which you should start paddling.
A useful drill: spend several sessions just paddling into waves without trying to stand. Watch how each wave accelerates, slows and steepens. That feel will be your best asset the day you add the foil to the equation.
Foil kit for beginners
Choosing your kit is the most critical step for a beginner surf foiler. Too technical a foil will hold back your progress, while a well-sized one makes learning smooth and safe.
The foil board (volume, length)
To start out in surf foiling, go for a board with generous volume. Unlike normal surfing, where you chase low volumes for manoeuvrability, foiling needs flotation at the start.
Recommended volume: between 40 and 70 litres above your weight in kilos. If you weigh 75kg, a board of 115 to 145 litres will be ideal. That extra flotation lets you paddle efficiently and lift off with less effort.
Length: a board of 6'0" to 7'6" offers a good compromise between paddling lift and manoeuvrability. Boards that are too short (under 6') demand perfect timing and leave no margin for a positioning error.
The mast and the fuselage
Mast: to start, a mast of 75 to 85cm is a good compromise. The shorter the mast, the more tolerant and easy to control the foil, but the less it clears the disturbed surface. A mast of 90cm or more comes into its own once you've mastered take-off, as it gives more freedom in steeper waves.
Fuselage: choose a medium-length fuselage (70 to 80cm). Short fuselages (under 65cm) are too twitchy for a beginner. Long fuselages (over 85cm) give stability but make turning laborious.
Common materials are aluminium (robust, affordable, a little heavy), carbon (light, stiff, dearer) and a carbon/aluminium mix (good value). To start out, aluminium or a mix does the job.
The wings (large-surface front wing for beginners)
The front wing is the most important part of your set-up, and the single biggest influence on how quickly you progress.
Recommended surface: 900 to 1,200 cm² to start. These broad wings give generous lift at low speed, which means you can take off more easily, with less paddling speed.
Profile and aspect ratio: go for a low-aspect-ratio wing (short and wide) with a thick profile. This type of wing is more stable, more tolerant of trim variations, and offers a progressive rather than abrupt stall.

Don't forget the extras: a board bag, a foil-specific leash, and perhaps some sessions with an instructor to speed things up safely.
Safety and where to practise
Foiling is a sport that demands particular respect for safety. The edges of the mast and wings are sharp, and a badly managed fall can cause serious cuts.
Essential safety rules:
- Always wear a helmet and an impact vest when you're learning. Falls onto the board or the foil are frequent, and an impact vest also adds buoyancy.
- Use an ankle leash (not a waist leash in surf foiling, since you need to be able to get away from the board in a fall).
- Keep clear of other water users: never practise near swimmers, bodyboarders or other surfers. The foil creates a danger zone of several metres around the rider.
- Learn how to fall: when you fall, push the board away from you and swim clear. Never climb back onto the board without checking the foil is facing you and poses no danger.
- Check your kit before every session: fixings, wing integrity, the state of the pad.
Recommended places to practise: for your first sessions, choose a spot with a gentle, regular swell, a sandy bottom and few people around. Beaches with a gentle gradient and waves that break progressively are ideal. Avoid reefs, rocky areas and busy spots. Always check the Met Office forecast, and be aware of local RNLI advice and lifeguarded zones.
In the UK, several spots suit learning: gentle, sandy beach breaks along the Cornwall and Devon coasts, and the North East on the right days, offer favourable conditions. Always check in with local schools.
Foiling isn't inherently dangerous, but the sharp edges of the mast and wings mean cuts are the injury to plan around. Get the helmet, the impact vest and the right leash sorted, pick a quiet stretch of water and learn how to fall before you need to, and the risk sits at a manageable level.
