Very few boards fit inside a hatchback, which makes a surfboard roof rack the first bit of kit most surfers buy after the board itself. The choice runs from fixed roof bars with pads, through soft racks that strap through the door openings, to suction mounts and simply folding the seats down. Each option has an honest use case, a realistic board count and limits the manufacturers are upfront about. Here is how to pick one, how to strap a board without crushing it, and where UK load rules come in.

For regular use, fixed roof bars with pads and cam-buckle straps are the reference setup: stable at motorway speed, lockable, and good for two or three boards. Fixed roof bars are the benchmark roof rack: the load sits on a rigid structure, manufacturers publish spacing and weight instructions, and several systems lock against theft. Add pads to protect the rails β most off-the-shelf pads are designed around one large board per pair, and stacking beyond that means a towel between boards. Soft racks solve the no-fixing-points problem: two foam blocks on the roof, tie-down straps running through the door apertures. They are cheap and fitted in minutes, but the roof skin and door frames flex, so paddleboard brands themselves pitch them at local transport and a few minutes of dual carriageway, not loaded motorway miles.
Suction mounts grip impressively on a clean roof β and fail abruptly on a dirty or tired seal. They demand a spotless surface, periodic checking on the road, and strict respect for the speed limit printed in the instructions. Strapping a board down properly
For the boards themselves, cam-buckle straps are what board and rack makers recommend: you tension by hand, the cam holds, and it is hard to over-tighten. Never rely on rope or bungees as the main securing method β that is explicit in the DVSA's load-securing guidance for roof loads, which calls for proper cargo straps or clamping.
Ratchet straps are the DVSA's tool of choice for rigid loads like ladders β but their mechanical advantage is exactly what damages boards. Over-tightened, a ratchet dents rails, deforms foam cores and can crack a glassed board; SUP brands warn about strap indentations for the same reason. If a ratchet is all you have, tension it barely beyond snug and pad the rails generously.
Orientation: rails resting on the pads, fins up so nothing snags, board centred on the car. Thule's SUP carrier instructions go further β fins forward and up β and if you use their carrier, follow their tested configuration. Stack multiple boards with a towel between each and chafe guards where the strap crosses the rails. And when a long board projects well beyond the bars, add a front tie-down line from the nose to a chassis anchor point: DVSA guidance requires exactly that for long loads such as ladders and canoes, to stop the front lifting at speed.
Then the habit that prevents most incidents: pull over after ten to fifteen minutes and re-tension. Straps settle, foam compresses, and that first stop is when slack shows up. What the UK rules say
Two strands of official guidance matter. The DVSA's load-securing guidance covers how the load is attached: stay within the manufacturer's roof-rack weight limit, secure with proper straps or clamping rather than rope or bungees, and tie down the front of long projecting loads so they cannot lift. The Department for Transport's rules on projecting loads cover how far a load may stick out: minor overhangs are fine without any marking, longer ones require marker boards and lighting, and the extreme cases β abnormal loads, or vehicles over about 2.5 m wide β involve police notification. A surfboard or SUP on a car virtually never reaches those thresholds; if you are hauling something unusually long, check the DfT's overhanging-loads guidance for the exact distances rather than guessing.
The practical target is simpler than the rulebook: keep the board within the car's footprint, secured so it cannot move or lift, and none of the marking rules ever come into play.
These rules are national. Drive onto a ferry to Spain, for instance, and any rear overhang must be marked with a V-20 panel, while France applies its own code de la route. Check the destination country's rules before a surf trip abroad.

The decision rule is short: if your car can take fixed bars and you drive to the coast more than a handful of times a year, the upgrade pays for itself in the first season. Soft racks remain the right answer for a hire car or the occasional ten-minute run to the beach.
Carrying the board inside the car
With the rear seats folded, a shortboard β and in an estate, often a longboard β travels with no wind load, no theft exposure when parked, and no overhang rules to think about. Load it nose first towards the dashboard, tail to the boot, rails padded with towels or foam where they meet trim, and strap the board to the luggage tie-downs so it cannot slide forward under braking. One last detail that has ruined plenty of upholstery: wax melts in a warm car. Keep the deck in a bag or on a plastic sheet, never wax-down on the seat fabric.
Long board, small car: when to change approach
Some setups are marginal even with a good roof rack. A 12 ft rigid SUP on a short city car stacks up problems: keeping it inside the front profile pushes the rear overhang out, crosswind forces are huge relative to the car's mass, and the combined weight of boards plus carrier creeps towards the roof-load rating β often 50β75 kg, and it is in the handbook. At that point a trailer built for long loads, a hired estate or van, or simply having the shop deliver is not overcaution; it is the easiest way to stay legal and stable.
