Choosing floating sunglasses

On the water your eyes take UV twice: straight from the sky, and bounced back off the surface. A good pair of floating sunglasses for surf, SUP or kite has to do more than a high-street pair — block the light properly, stay on your head, shrug off salt and, ideally, come back up when you drop them. Here is how to read lens categories, what polarised lenses genuinely do, and the sessions where the smartest move is to wear nothing at all.

In short

For bright sun on open water: category 3 lenses, polycarbonate or nylon, full UV protection, a frame that floats or is held by a strap. Polarised lenses kill surface glare but can black out LCD screens. Category 4 is for extreme glare only — and not road-legal. And in waves of consequence, most surfers leave their sunglasses on the beach.

Does water really "double" your UV exposure?

The slogan is everywhere; the physics is more measured. Open water generally reflects less than 10–20% of incident UV, sea foam around 25%, and sand 10–25%. Reflectance climbs sharply when the sun sits low and hits the surface at a grazing angle. So your eyes take the direct dose plus a reflected share from water, foam and beach: substantially more than on non-reflective ground, but not an automatic doubling. "Water doubles UV" is marketing shorthand — the risk behind it, though, is real.

Two documented conditions make the case for protecting your eyes afloat. Photokeratitis is acute sunburn of the cornea, and strong reflection off water, snow or sand is a recognised cause. Pterygium — "surfer's eye" — is a benign growth of conjunctival tissue creeping onto the cornea; its main risk factor is cumulative UV exposure, and it turns up more often in people who spend long hours near reflective surfaces. It is the dose accumulated over years that matters, which is why watersports sunglasses belong in the bag for every sunny session, not just August.

Lens categories: reading the 0-to-4 scale

The European standard EN ISO 12312-1 grades sun lenses by how much visible light they let through (VLT). Check the category before the brand and long before the lens colour.

For surf, SUP or kite in bright conditions, category 3 is the right default: it removes most of the glare while keeping enough detail, and it stays legal for the drive to the beach. Category 4 passes only 3–8% of visible light — valuable under extreme reflection, but it crushes shadows so hard it is deemed unsuitable for driving, and its marking must say so. Treat it as a specialist lens, overkill for short sessions or changeable light.

Polarised lenses: what they give, what they take

A polarising filter passes only vertical light waves and blocks the horizontally polarised light bouncing off the surface. The measurable result: surface glare drops, contrast lifts, and chop, obstacles and your line all read more easily. For paddleboarding, kiting, sailing or fishing, that adds up to real comfort over a long day.

The documented downside is LCD screens. Many carry their own polarising filter, and at certain angles the two filters cancel out — a GPS watch, camera screen or phone can look very dark or completely black, sometimes with rainbow blotches. If you navigate by instruments, factor that in. There is a second, community-level caveat: some experienced surfers feel polarisation flattens the micro-glare they use to read the wave's surface texture, and choose non-polarised lenses for it. The formal evidence stops at glare and screens, so treat the wave-reading point as an expert preference, not an established fact.

What makes floating sunglasses worth the name

Flotation first. "Floating frame" is a binary promise: it floats or it sinks. Take LiP as an example — the FLO model floats by design, and the brand sells it without a leash, while other models in the same range, the Surge and the Typhoon, do not float and ship with one. SeaSpecs also markets floating frames on some models. Read the spec sheet — watersports eyewear does not float by default — and if in any doubt, drop the pair in a bucket of salt water before you trust it.

Retention second. An adjustable strap, or a leash tying the frame to a helmet or rash vest, cuts the risk of losing them substantially — without eliminating it in a proper wipeout. On floating sunglasses the strap is useful insurance; on non-floating ones it is essential.

Then the lens itself. Polycarbonate is the sports standard: close to shatterproof — up to ten times more impact-resistant than many other plastics — and light, but soft, so it needs a hard coat against scratches. Nylon pairs strong impact resistance with excellent tolerance of salt water, and shows up on premium models. Glass is optically superb but heavy and can shatter on impact: keep it for calm boating, not board sports. Round it out with hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings, which bead water off and limit sunscreen smears, and a frame with decent venting — which reduces fogging but never abolishes it, whatever the "fog-free" sticker claims. If you wear a prescription, there are Rx inserts and direct prescription lenses; pick polycarbonate for impact.

And the care that keeps it working. Salt and sand eat coatings: rinse each lens for 15–20 seconds under cool fresh water after a session, and never wipe a lens still carrying salt or grit. Air-dry, finish with a microfibre cloth, and keep the pair away from car dashboards and household cleaners.

When to leave them on the beach

In waves of consequence — a serious reef, heavy shorebreak, real volume — sunglasses are a rigid object millimetres from your eyes. Face-first contact with the board, a lens ripped away in the washing machine, loss despite the leash: the practitioners' consensus is clear, and any solid line-up confirms it. Almost nobody shortboards heavy waves in surf sunglasses, both for the impact risk and to keep vision and cues untouched. They earn their place instead on SUP, kite, wing, foil and mellow longboard days — less percussive riding, hours of glare, and the trade-off makes sense.

Between sessions the protection carries on across the sand, which reflects a share of UV itself.
